Hantavirus Information

Due to numerous inquiries and request for information regarding Hantavirus. Leavenworth County Health Department is aware of recent public concern regarding international reports involving hantavirus infections, specifically the Andes virus strain, and questions about potential impacts related to upcoming FIFA World Cup activities and international travel.

At this time, there are no confirmed cases of Andes virus or hantavirus transmission associated with Leavenworth County, Kansas. The overall risk to the public remains low. Public health officials continue to monitor guidance and updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

Hantaviruses are a family of viruses primarily spread through contact with infected rodents, especially exposure to rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or contaminated dust particles. In the United States, hantavirus infections are rare and are most associated with environmental rodent exposure rather than person-to-person transmission.

The Andes virus strain, found primarily in parts of South America, is unique because limited person-to-person transmission has been documented among close contacts in rare situations. Current international investigations involving a cruise ship outbreak remain ongoing, and health agencies continue active monitoring and contact tracing efforts. Transmission of the Andes virus generally requires close and prolonged contact with an infected individual, such as sharing a bed, intimate contact, or providing direct caregiving. Casual contact in public settings, such as grocery stores or other community locations, is not considered a significant risk for transmission.

The Leavenworth County Health Department is actively maintaining communication with local, regional, state, and federal partners regarding emerging infectious disease concerns and large-scale event preparedness activities associated with FIFA World Cup planning.

Residents are encouraged to remain informed through reliable public health sources and avoid spreading misinformation or unverified claims circulating online.

Individuals should seek medical attention if they experience the following symptoms and particularly following known rodent exposure or recent travel to affected areas:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Shortness of breath
  • Severe respiratory symptoms

The Leavenworth County Health Department will continue monitoring developments and will provide additional information if guidance or risk levels change.
