You may have seen recent news about the current multistate cyclosporiasis outbreak. While this outbreak is receiving national attention, it's important to know that Cyclospora infections occur every year, especially during the spring and summer months. Public health agencies closely monitor cases each season and work to identify the source of outbreaks to help prevent additional illnesses.

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that can cause intestinal illness. Symptoms may include:
- Watery diarrhea
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
You can help reduce your risk by:
- Wash fresh fruits and vegetables before eating or preparing them.
- Washing your hands before handling food and before eating.
- Drinking safe, clean water.
- Contacting your healthcare provider if you develop persistent diarrhea or other symptoms.
